With the election rapidly approaching, I have watched all sides argue over whether or not their opponents are more or less patriotic than themselves, and it got me thinking about patriotism, what it is, and how it is viewed around the world.

Patriotism is a feeling of love and devotion to one's own homeland (patria, the land of one's fathers). This post surveys the concept of patriotism from the viewpoints of history, politics, ethics, and biology. It may also be defined as the love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it; "they rode the same wave of popular patriotism"; "British nationalism was in the air and patriotic sentiments ran high".
