Hawks BEAT Penn State And Monks FIGHT For Jesus
Well it is another Monday full of happiness and hope, as the University of Iowa Hawkeyes BEAT Penn State on Saturday in the last seconds, with a field goal, finishing the game 24 to 23. I was working at my Art Kiosk between Bennigans, and Chick-fil-A and Target. As the game wound down, a crowd was gathering just outside Bennigans on myside, as people watched the big screen television Bennigans has on their east wall through "their" windows.
There was alot of murmuring and quiet hopes as the Hawkeyes moved down the field and lined up for the field goal. A HUGE cheer went up as the ball went through the uprights, and a great deal of congratulations ran through the hallway, as whoops and hollers continued for a few minutes.
It was an awesome ending and it was a joy to wake up Sunday morning and find out that it was not just a dream!!
Congratulations to the Hawkeyes who participated in this Awesome Win, and Best Of Luck on the upcoming Purdue game, this Saturday!!
There are a few stories of interest this weekend, from the sad news of the deaths of 20 Russian submariners in the accident onboard their new sub, to the moderately amusing story of the fight between the Orthodox Greek monks and the Armenian monks at the Church of The Holy Sepulchre, which is supposedly were Jesus (the Prince of Peace) was killed, buried, and arisen!?! I know violence shouldn't be amusing, but I guess it is the irony of it that got my attention. So here is the "Brawling For Jesus" story at Yahoo News with a link to the full text and photos.
Have a Good Monday!!
Israeli police rushed into one of Christianity's holiest churches Sunday and arrested two clergyman after an argument between monks erupted into a brawl next to the site of Jesus' tomb.
The clash between Armenian and Greek Orthodox monks broke out in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, revered as the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection. The brawling began during a procession of Armenian clergymen commemorating the 4th-century discovery of the cross believed to have been used to crucify Jesus.
The Greeks objected to the march without one of their monks present, fearing that otherwise, the procession would subvert their own claim to the Edicule — the ancient structure built on what is believed to be the tomb of Jesus — and give the Armenians a claim to the site. The Armenians refused, and when they tried to march the Greek Orthodox monks blocked their way, sparking the brawl.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police were forced to intervene after fighting was reported. They arrested two monks, one from each side, he said. A bearded Armenian monk in a red-and-pink robe and a black-clad Greek Orthodox monk with a bloody gash on his forehead were both taken away in handcuffs after scuffling with dozens of riot police.
Six Christian sects divide control of the ancient church. They regularly fight over turf and influence, and Israeli police are occasionally forced to intervene.

Thank You Hawks
Thank you to the University Of Iowa Hawkeyes for winning today and making a bowl game and a moderately acceptable "building" season possible!!!
Albert Young rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns, Jake Christensen added 157 yards passing and Iowa became bowl eligible with a 21-16 victory over Minnesota on Saturday. The Hawkeyes (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) reclaimed the "Floyd of Rosedale," a bronze pig given annually to the winner, with its sixth victory in seven tries over rival Minnesota (1-10, 0-7).
Next week we face Western Michigan and may we provide a better show and a better game!!Good Luck Guys!!!

Hawkeyes Beat Michigan State In Double OT
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HAWKEYES FOR BEATING MICHIGAN STATE IN DOUBLE OVERTIME!!
It was a long scary week as the Michigan State game got closer and closer. There were letters to the editor of the Iowa Press-Citizen asking them to fire Pat Harty, for saying what many in Iowa City were muttering to themselves, since the last loss. I hope that with the fantastic win in double overtime, everyone can step back a little and see how much more can be done this season. The one thing that stands out loud and clear is that Coach Ferentz needs to explore more of the young talent he brought here. My boss said that his loyalty to players is his detriment, as he refuses to give other players who may be better, and only does so when it is necessary, as when someone is injured. He said that it is said that you need to hope someone is injured, just so a better player can be brought in. In particular, this is the case with our quarterback, Jake Christensen, probably one of the worst Hawkeye quarterbacks ever, according to what fans are saying. I don't really know that much about it, as I am a fan, but not a rabid fan. However, the fans I do hear talking are "psycho" Hawk fans, and that is their assessment. He is probably a nice guy, but if the nice guy can't produce the wins week after week, he needs to rest on the bench while someone gets a shot at winning. Now, they did win this week, but a lot of people are saying that they won in spite of Mr. Christensen, not because of him! We should see Mr. Arvell Nelson in the quarterback slot next week. Perhaps, he is not any better, but he cannot be much worse either, and he is going to need experience for next year, so give him a shot!
The story at the Bonita News says that, late in a season marred by injuries, it was only fitting that two third-stringers would lead Iowa to its first overtime win at Kinnick Stadium. Freshman Jevon Pugh from Naples High scored the go-ahead touchdown in double overtime and Drew Gardner, a seldom-used cornerback, stopped Michigan State's Devin Thomas on the ensuing fourth down to help Iowa beat the Spartans 34-27 on Saturday.
Anyway, next week is a road game at Northwestern, so best of luck in continuing to win. Try out some of the guys on the bench and let's have the BEST guys on the field no matter their grade or level of experience!!

HAWKS BEAT ILLINI
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA HAWKEYES ON THEIR WIN OVER ILLINOIS, SATURDAY, 10 TO 6!!! HOORAY!!!
Iowa's Brett Greenwood intercepted an Eddie McGee pass at the goal line with 1:12 left and the Hawkeyes upset No. 18 Illinois 10-6 on Saturday, snapping the Illini's five-game winning streak.
Jake Christensen threw for 182 yards and a touchdown and Albert Young added 99 yards rushing for the Hawkeyes (3-4, 1-3 Big Ten), who broke an eight-game losing streak in Big 10 play and knocked off a ranked opponent for the first time since 2005.
I don't know if this will turn into a second win next week against Purdue, but at least we can see that this team has the potential to win, if they can just keep it together like they did today. The score seemed like it should have been higher, but as one other Hawk fan said after the Hawks won, "A Win is a Win!"
Coach Ferentz has been taken a beating from a lot of us angry/upset fans, and the look on his face the last 40 seconds, was one of wanting to burst into tears. He kept his composure, but you could see the relief in his expression, as this game came to a close.
Good job guys! Now hold it together and work as hard this next week on beating Purdue, as you did on Illinois, and you'll do well next week!! Thanks for the win!!!

Hawkeyes Disappoint Again
Sadly today Penn State's slumbering offense woke up against Iowa.
Anthony Morelli threw for 233 yards and a touchdown, Rodney Kinlaw ran for a career-high 168 yards and two scores and the Penn State defense shut down the Hawkeyes in a 27-7 win Saturday at Beaver Stadium. After two straight defeats marked by turnovers and red-zone mistakes, a beleaguered offense gained 489 yards and came up big in some key situations for Penn State (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten).
Our Struggling Iowa Hawkeyes (2-4, 0-3) lost its eighth straight conference game!
This day has many of us wondering if we are going to win ANY games this year. We support the Hawkeyes mightily, but in the pit of our stomaches we already feel the twisting nervousness of what will happen next week against Illinois !!

Hawkeyes And Fans Are At A Loss
Today, Saturday, September 29th, 2007, the Hawkeyes were beaten by Illinois, and the players and their fans, are wondering if we can win ANY games this year. The fans ranged from heartbroken to angry, at the antics by the offense, and the only good words were for how well the defense did, until they just plain got worn out from being on the field so long.
Whoever was calling the plays for the Hawkeyes, must have a fetish for Boston College, and their former quarterback, Doug Flutie and his Hail Mary pass which saved the game for them. However Christensen is no Doug Flutie, and the Hawkeyes are no Boston College, so get the offensive coordinator to pull his head out and get back to some basic football plays. These are too inexperienced to try once in a lifetime plays, "every" play.
Iowa (2-3, 0-2) played added to its difficulties with penalties and breakdowns in pass protection. Jake Christensen passed for 308 yards and three TDs but was sacked nine times, with end Jammie Kirlew getting four of those sacks. The Hawkeyes also missed two field goals, including a straight-on 25-yarder, and an extra point. The haven't won a Big Ten game since beating Purdue 47-17 last Oct. 7.
Kellen Lewis threw two touchdown passes and was officially credited with a third when he ran 71 yards after picking up a teammate's fumble, leading Indiana to a 38-20 victory over Iowa on Saturday.
Next week it is on to Penn State, and a tough team, Perhaps, the coaches will use this week to try and come up with some realistic plays to move the ball down the field, because the defense cannot win the game by itself!! Good Luck!!

Hawkeyes Look GOOD In Loss
Alright the University of Iowa Hawkeyes lost this evening, but I was very impressed with how well this young team played, and I think we shall have a good year this year, and an excellent team next year. We are going to beat Indiana next week for homecoming, and will have other wins, and perhaps some stunners.
No. 9 Wisconsin needed a fourth-quarter rally to avoid an upset bid by Iowa, turning to P.J. Hill for the go-ahead score in a 17-13 victory Saturday night. Nothing came easy for the Badgers (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten), who gradually overcame a stingy Hawkeyes defense to extend their winning streak to 13 games — the longest active streak in major college football.
Wisconsin was given one touchdown by the officials and lucked out when a flag should have been thrown in the 4th quarter, but was not!
Congratulations to these freshman who took to the field and made a fine showing against Wisconsin!! Keep up the spirit and the fight will be yours next week!!
Happy Homecoming!!

Hawkeyes WIN 16-3
Congratulations to Coach Ferentz and the Hawkeye team. May this winning start continue!! HOORAY!!!
Albert Young gave Iowa some good news. The senior ran for 144 yards and a touchdown to lead the Hawkeyes to a 16-3 victory over Northern Iillinois in the season opener at Soldier Field on Saturday.
With the memories of a 6-7 season still lingering, Iowa took another hit when leading receiver Dominique Douglas and backup Anthony Bowman were suspended indefinitely for their role in a credit card scandal two weeks ago.
Hopefully, everything will be resolved and the team well go on stronger than ever. Best of Luck!! And Again HOORAY!! Go Hawks!!

2 Hawkeyes Suspended Indefinitely
In a disturbing story in the morning Hawkeye Update from the Iowa Press-Citizen it says that two University of Iowa football players have been suspended indefinitely following their arrest Sunday. Sophomore wide receivers Dominique Douglas and Anthony Bowman were taken into custody by University of Iowa Police. They were charged with unauthorized use of a credit card and were later released on their own recognizance.
What is wrong with these people? They have everything going for them, as is evidenced by the fact that Douglas led the nation in number of receptions by a freshman and started in 11 Hawkeye games. He was looked upon to have a great year this season and now, because someone did not teach him or Bowman right from wrong, they may have ended their careers, before they even had a chance to start, and may well end up in prison, if found guilty. They not only may have thrown away their sports careers, but their academic lives as well.
Perhaps some ethics training is in order for all incoming freshman, as well as for K-12 grades, because it is easy to see in the number of shoplifting arrests alone, made at the mall that many young people do not see stealing in many forms as being wrong. I was told by security that most of the time that they catch people stealing, that they have enough money on them, to pay for the item, but just choose to take it. I know this is a little afield from the story, but the ethics lapse is evident not in just their case, but in others as I mentioned about the mall "thieves", etc.,. "Everybody" wants to be a Gansta or a Thug and more is the pity.
It is possible that because Douglas and Bowman do not seem to have any other criminal records, or none that are known yet, they may get off with lesser sentences, and if they do, hopefully they will have learned a lesson of a lifetime, and can have more honest lives. We will keep watching as the case moves forward.
