Suspect Photos In UNC Student's Murder Case

I was just reading this story conerning the killing of UNC student Eve Carson, and a link to the full story and photos of the suspect are there!!

Detectives are searching for a man photographed using the ATM card of the University of North Carolina student body president found shot to death on a city street, police said Saturday.

Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Curran released two surveillance photos of the suspect taken at an ATM machine in Chapel Hill, but declined to say when or exactly where the photos were taken. Police also released a photo of a baseball cap the suspect appears to be wearing in both of the surveillance pictures.

"This is our biggest break so far in this case," Curran said.

New Developments In Madeline McCann Case

There have been reports that the parents of little Madeline McCann were involved in her disappearance and now they have been more developments.

It seems that the British couple named as suspects in the disappearance of their 4-year-old daughter are eager to leave Portugal, a family friend said Saturday. The girl's uncle, defending the parents, called on police to reveal any evidence against them. Gerry McCann, 4-year-old Madeleine's father, said he and his wife expected clarification of their legal status within 48 hours, according to the friend, Clarence Mitchell. Their lawyer said late Friday that police had declared the parents suspects in the May 3 disappearance.

I think everyone that has followed this case up until a few days ago, were convinced that these people were innocent and now it has gotten so very confusing. I thought that it was the guy who lived nearby the hotel, but his involvement seems to have waned as new evidence shows trace amounts of Madeline's blood in an auto that was not rented until 25 days after her disappearance.

This next week should bring about a dramatic conclusion to this case as the police have offered Mrs. McCann a plea agreement of just two years in jail if she confesses and tells all.

May Justice be done and allow the case of Madeline to have closure.

Cedar Rapids To Host Terror Suspect Trial

There is an interesting story unfolding right here in eastern iowa. On July 16th, Abdel-liah Elmardoudi, a 41 year old Moroccan, is to go on trial in federal court, in Cedar Rapids, on charges of conspiring with others to create fake visas, alien registration cards, and other documents. He also is accused of obtaining fraudulent Social Security numbers and cards for foreign nationals living in the United States, and being part of a terror cell, with plans against the United States.

Mr. Elmardoudi is trying to get the federal court to dismiss his case here in Iowa, because the ket prosecution witness is a known liar.

This case is also intertwined with federal charges in Michigan and Minnesota, so we shall see how it all plays out over the next few weeks. It is the first case of its' kind post 9/11. The scheme supposedly started in July 2001, shortly before 9/11, when Youssef Hmimssa, a computer expert and scam artist, and at least 20 people were brought to Iowa to get Social Security cards, backed up by counterfeit documents. Elmardoudi is accused of getting at least two of the Social Security numbers for himself under different aliases. His known aliases are Abdullah, Hussein Mohsen Safieddine, Egyptian national George Labibe, and French national Jean-Pierre Tardelli. He then used the Social Security cards to open bank accounts , got jobs, found housing, applied for credit cards, and obtained identification cards or driver's licenses in Iowa and elsewhere.

Mr. Elmardoudi has tried to say that his charges must be dropped, because he has not been given a speedy trial, even though he has been causing delays all through the process. He had fled in 2001, and he has asked for or agreed to continuances, and has refused efforts to negotiate a plea agreement that would have encompassed charges in Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota, according to assistant United States Attorney Kandice Wilcox, who will be prosecuting the case against Mr. Elmardoudi.

There is much more extensive coverage of this case on the news and I am sure it will be written about extensively as the trial begins. It should be interesting to see just how easy it was for these people to operate under our laws and obtain documents that made them appear to be legal citizens. Just one more argument against immigration reform and its' TAMPER PROOF identification cards!!

Guantanamo Bay May Close

There have been rumblings from The White House concerning a possible closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility due to the bad image that it has given to the "war on terror". Rumors are that the terror suspects who are being held there will be moved to military prisons around the world, perhaps in Afghanistan or even Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where they could face trials.

I was listening to a radio news report, that said that on Friday, June 22, there was a meeting with Vice-President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff, National intelligence Director Mike McConnell, and Joint Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace attending.

The news reports have long been highly critical of Guantanamo Bay and human rights groups have decried the terror suspects being held there as being ill-treated and abused. There have been some over stepping "bordering on abuse" by the military and the Bush administration in their handling of these terror suspects, but I think that was more true right after 9/11 then it is now. The suspects who remain in Guatanamo Bay are still considered dangerous, and many of them would be unable to return to their home countries even if they were released as they do not want them to return "home".

One issue I have with the detention facility is that it has been a long time, and there should be a endgame to their incarceration, either they are terrorists or they are not, so get on with the military tribunals. It didn't take this long to hold trials after World War II in Nuremburg for the Nazi's who were tried and that was in a post war Europe, while they were still trying to rebuild their countries. So finding Justice is about the will to do so, and the Bush administration has not been willing to do so!

Guantanamo Bay should probably be closed as it is just one more bad image used by our enemies against an America that is loathed and hated by many people around the world. We are a great nation and the continuing incarceration of suspects who do not seem to have a chance of getting Justice belies who we say we are as a Nation built on "being innocent, until proven guilty".

Let's live up to our ideals Mr. President and order your people to get this resolved right now.
